What is Apraxia of Speech?

Looking for a Speech therapist that is experienced and well trained to treat and diagnose children with Apraxia of speech, then this is for you. I started learning about Apraxia in 2022 and went for advanced trainings in 2023 led by Edyth Strand. Since then I have completed numerous higher-level trainings with respected and renowned researchers.  Additionally, I continuously collaborate on a weekly basis with a prior speech supervisor and a super star researcher in Staten Island focused on apraxia speech therapy ( more about this later).

Q and A:

1.        Does my child need to be verbal to have an apraxia diagnosis? NO.

2.        Do I need to wait until 3 to diagnose apraxia? No.

3.        What is apraxia? Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a motor speech disorder that makes it difficult for children to speak. Children with the diagnosis of apraxia of speech generally have a good understanding of language and know what they want to say. However, they have difficulty learning or carrying out the complex sequenced movements that are necessary for intelligible speech ( Apraxia kids website).

4.        Who  Can diagnosis CAS ? A speech-language pathologist.  Secure a speech language pathologist who has experience in the diagnosis and treatment of motor speech disorders or oral-motor functioning. ( Apraxia kids website).

5.        Does my child need to have another diagnosis to have CAS? No. children can have a standalone diagnosis with no other comorbidity.

6.        My child DOES have another diagnosis … Can it still be CAS? YES! There is new research out there that is educating parents that a comorbidity is the rule rather than the exception! More and more children are being diagnosed with Apraxia.

7.        I am a parent of a child with Apraxia. Can I attend an Apraxia kids conference? Yes!

8.        I have an SLP working with my child already what should they be doing?  The SLP sound have you in the sessions showing your techniques and giving you homework weekly. Yes, you need in the therapy room initially if not always.

9.        I need resources please show me where I can learn more!
